Where
We Work
| |
The focal
point of our work is the rural villages of Honduras, which is a country of
many different indigenous groups of people, from the Garifuna on the
North Coast, to the Mayans of the Highlands, the Lenca in the Western
area of Honduras, and many more in between. It is one of the poorest
countries in the Western Hemisphere, surpassed only by Haiti.
Subsistence farming is how the majority in the rural countryside sustain
themselves. Oxfam helps with much needed projects, Rights Action Group
works as an intermediary assisting people in getting needs met by the government.
The JMC Domestic
Violence Prevention Program wishes to fit into our specific niche in
Honduras by building and staffing safe houses. Offering psychological
assistance for the abused women and children is a large component of our
program and is teaching women a trade so when they leave they can make
an independent living. Our program also encompasses working with men in the community to go through an Anger
Management Training and Group Therapy. Also, our organization works with other organizations
that exist both
within Honduras and the international community to help us.
Joining
together with other organizations to meet the diverse needs of the rural
population of women and children gives these individuals the
opportunities to succeed. We believe organizations must work
together to assist the Hondurans in succeeding. Meeting with the leaders
of other organizations helps us all work together to strengthen the
communities by engaging in shared projects. The organizations we hope to
work with include; “Women for
Women International”, “Pro Mujer”, “Habitat for Humanity”, “Global
Opportunities" and “Heifer International”.
We also are
committed to working with the Minister of Women's Affairs in Honduras to
help in whatever capacity that they can assist us. We all want to avoid another devastating fire like the
one that occurred at
the safe house in Tegucigalpa in 2006 killing 9 women and children.
We will have 4 guards who work and rotate 24/7 to keep those in the
house safe.
We can not do this without the support from
people like you! We must be willing to think beyond the
boundaries of the U.S.A. As Americans, we are the most generous
people in the world, in my opinion. We offer help to any country
that has been devastated by floods, famine, and earthquakes, etc.
When giving
please don’t ever think that a small amount doesn’t matter.
Every $50 can bring a month's worth of medicine and transportation to an
abused woman or child.
In Honduras
there NO services for battered and abuse people. The police don't help,
few listen, fewer step in, women feel helpless and many don't leave
their homes until they leave in a pine box. |
